In what is intended as an effort to protect community aeshtetics, many Declarations contain restrictions limiting or prohibiting satellite dishes. Older documents may refer only to television antennae, and associations now try to apply those archaic provisions to our modern world.
In many cases, an association's right to control satellite dishes and similar broadcast reception devices is limited by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. An association cannot impair a person's right to install such devices on any portion of their unit which they own or which is for their exclusive use.
There is an excellent set of FAQ's on satellite dishes at www.fcc.gov
